Patio Work
Our Concrete Patio Work in Charlotte
Patios are the job we pour most often, ahead of driveways.
Most of our Charlotte jobs are patios. Outside the city, we have poured them in Huntersville and Harrisburg.
Planning
Picking the Size and Shape
Before you call, set your table and chairs on the grass where the new concrete patio would go.
Mark the outline with a garden hose or a can of spray paint. Then give us the rough length and width when you ask for a quote.
Square edges line up with the house. Curves follow beds, trees and the line of the yard. The Harrisburg patio in the photos below does both: square along the house, curved out in the yard.
If your back door sits well above the ground, plan for a step down to the patio. Ask for it in the quote so it is priced in.
Water
Draining Water Away From the House
A concrete patio sits right against your foundation. If it tilts the wrong way, every storm sends water toward the house.
We slope the concrete so water runs off it, where the site allows. On a patio, that means away from the house.
Red clay drains slowly, so water that runs off the slab can sit in the yard for a while. Tell us where your downspouts empty and where the yard stays wet after rain. We plan the slope around that.
Add-Ons
Making an Existing Patio Bigger
If your concrete patio is only big enough for a grill, we can add onto it. We pour new concrete off the edge of the old slab.
New concrete next to old will not match its color exactly, so you will see where they meet.
If the old slab is cracked or sunk, adding onto it will not fix that. We can replace just the bad section, or tear out the whole patio and start over.
Old Patios
Tearing Out an Old Patio
Some old patios are past saving. They are broken in pieces, sunk at one end or tipped toward the house.
In that case we break the old slab out, then pour a new concrete patio in its place. Hauling the old concrete away is included when your quote lists it.
Mention the old patio when you ask for a quote. Tearing it out changes the price, and it can add a day to the job.
Pour Day
How We Pour a Patio
Utility Lines Marked
Before any digging, we have NC 811 mark the public lines, which takes 3 working days. Sprinkler lines, pet fences and yard lights are private and stay unmarked, so point them out.
Ground Packed Firm
We compact the dirt where the patio goes before any concrete is poured.
Fiber in the Mix
Fiber goes into the concrete on every patio, same as every other pour.
About 4 Inches Thick
The standard patio is about 4 inches thick with a broom finish. Your quote spells out anything different.
Upgrade
Stamped Patios
Broom finish is the standard. Stamping presses a pattern, like stone or brick, into the wet concrete. It costs more than broom.
Our stamped patio jobs include homes in Charlotte and Davidson. One Charlotte patio has a dark border around the pattern. See the stamped concrete page for more on it.

I recently hired Rhino Concrete to replace my backyard patio, and they did an outstanding job! The team quickly demolished and hauled away my old, worn-out concrete, preparing the site perfectly for the new installation. The new patio looks incredible, featuring smooth curves and a flawless finish. Their pricing was very reasonable and competitive compared to other quotes, with absolutely no hidden costs. The crew was professional, efficient, and left the workspace clean. If you need high-quality concrete removal and installation at a fair price, I highly recommend Rhino Concrete!

FAQ
Patio Questions We Get
How much does a concrete patio cost in Charlotte?
It depends on the size, broom or stamped, and whether an old patio comes out first. A backyard the concrete truck cannot reach may need a pump, which adds to the price. Projects start at $3,500, so a very small slab costs more per square foot than a large one. Give us the rough size and we will quote it.
How long does a new concrete patio take?
Most jobs up to about 1,050 sq ft take one day on site. Up to 3,000 sq ft usually takes two: a prep day, then the pour. Tearing out old concrete can add a day. Before we dig, NC 811 needs 3 working days to mark the public lines. If a permit is needed, the start date waits on that too.
Can you extend my existing patio?
Yes. We add new concrete onto the side of the slab you have. The color of the new part will not match the old exactly. If the old part is cracked or sunk, ask about replacing that section at the same time.
Do I need a permit or HOA approval for a patio?
It depends on where you live and what you build, so check before we set a date. Permits and HOA approval are not included unless the quote lists them. If a permit is needed, we do not start until it is issued. If you are in an HOA, read its rules on patios first.
Will my new patio crack?
All concrete cracks. Control joints tell it where to crack. Those are the straight lines you see across a finished slab. A crack that follows a joint is doing what it should.
