How It Works

How Stamped Concrete Works

It starts as the same slab we pour for a broom finish. The difference is all in the top surface.

Color goes into the concrete mix. After it is smoothed, we spread release powder on the wet surface so the stamp mats do not stick. Then the mats are pressed in before the concrete sets.

The pattern can look like stone, slate or brick. The powder also leaves shading in the low spots, so the surface is not one flat color.

Under the pattern, nothing changes. The ground gets compacted, fiber goes in the mix, and the slab is about 4 inches thick unless your quote says otherwise.

Back Patios

This is where most people put it.

Pool Decks

A deck around a pool gets wet all summer. Ask about grip and drainage before you pick a pattern.

Sealer

Sealing and Looking After It

On a stamped concrete job, one of our guys comes back after the pour. That visit is for washing the slab, cutting the control joints and rolling on sealer.

Sealer changes the shine and the color tone. It also makes the surface slicker when it is wet.

Sealer wears with weather and use, so it needs a fresh coat from time to time. That upkeep is yours after we finish.

Sealer is part of the job only if your quote lists it. On stamped work, the quote normally does.

What to Expect

Why No Two Stamped Slabs Look the Same

Stamping is done by hand, so it is never perfectly even. The color shades from spot to spot and the pattern depth varies a little.

Some lines will not meet perfectly. That is normal for decorative stamped concrete.

Two pours never match exactly. If you plan to add on later, the new part will look a little different from the old one.

We settle the pattern and the color with you before we pour.

If you have an HOA, ask whether it has rules on color or pattern. HOA approval is not part of our quote unless the quote lists it.

Highly professional and thoughtful team. I loved that they checked in with me and genuinely cared about my concerns, like rounding the corners, ensuring water would drain appropriately, and designing a toddler-safe step. They even went above and beyond to make sure that all the dirt and clay that was removed was smoothly distributed, which was a very pleasant surprise! Everything from the consultation through to payment was very easy. Thank you so much!!!

I had an excellent experience working with Rhino Concrete! They were very responsive, worked with my timeline, and were able to create a custom shape for the space I had available. Price was great for the job I needed. Was really thankful for the clear communication from beginning to end of service and the hard work of the entire team on the day of the project. Will come back to Rhino once I’m ready for a back patio!

FAQ

Questions About Stamped Concrete in Charlotte

Can you stamp my existing concrete?

No. A stamp only works on fresh concrete while it is still wet. We do not do overlays or resurfacing, so the old slab comes out and a new stamped one goes in. Tearing out and hauling away the old slab is included only when the quote lists it.

Is stamped concrete better than pavers?

They are built differently. Pavers are separate pieces set on a base. Stamped concrete is one poured slab with the pattern pressed into the top, so there are no loose pieces to shift. The trade-off is repairs. A badly cracked stamped section gets cut out and poured again, and the new part will not match exactly. Pavers can be lifted and reset.

Will a stamped slab crack?

It can. All concrete cracks. Control joints tell it where to crack. The stamp only changes the top surface, so a stamped slab cracks the same way a plain one does. We compact the ground and put fiber in every pour. Nobody can promise a slab that never cracks.

Is a stamped finish slippery?

It can be, mostly when it is sealed and wet. Two things change how it feels underfoot: how much texture the pattern has, and the sealer. A pattern with more texture gives your feet more to grip. Sealer can be left off, which gives up some shine and color for a less slick surface. Around a pool, raise it at the walkthrough.

Can you stamp a walkway?

Yes. A walkway takes a stamp the same way a patio does. The walkway before and after on our homepage is one of our jobs. It was a worn dirt path along a side yard, and now it is a stamped walk. Projects start at $3,500, walkways included.

How much does stamped concrete cost in Charlotte?

More than a broom finish. Stamping adds color, release powder, stamp mats, sealer and extra labor. We price it after we measure, since size and site change the number. Projects start at $3,500, and we get back to you within 24 hours.

How long does a stamped patio take?

Most jobs up to about 1,050 sq ft take one day on site. Up to 3,000 sq ft usually takes two: a prep day, then the pour. Tearing out old concrete can add a day. A stamped slab takes the same number of days as a plain one of its size. The sealing visit comes after.
